Smoky French song writing. A pen, a ukulele/guitar, a 7D cam and a laptop. This way he is always ready to leave home for the road. His mind is very young though his body is not and he has memories of many places, people, times of the past.

Barry Topping (ex-Rodent Emporum/Amid Concrete & Callousness/Expendable Penguins of War)
Johnny Christie (Jed Potts and the Hillman Hunters)

The Gastric Band:
An instrumental rock band with "world music", electronic, and 20th century orchestral influences, among many others. Some have called their music "surprisingly accessible", whatever that means.
Featuring alumni from Secta Rouge, Super Adventure Club, Jackie Treehorn and others, the Gastric Band launch forth a gut-tightening onslaught of progrock-chamberjazz-electronica reminiscent of Nels Cline and Autechre jamming soundtracks to futuristic underwater movies.

All proceeds go to send Martin to Uganda in July to work with an AIDS charity.

March listings + new opening hours / club nights

Our March listings are now up at http://www.musicglue.net/theraft/ (currently up-to-date for all of March, although we're still awaiting additional information for some of the dates).

If you need more info about anything or want to get in touch about playing at Henry's or hiring the venue, you can still email claire at theraft dot org dot uk  (but please do NOT send any media files, we are unable to accept mp3s or audio or video files of ANY type, you can always send us a link to material available online instead).

We also have new regular opening days / hours for the month of March (and after hopefully!).
We'll now be open until 3am from Thursday to Sunday, plus occasional Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

On Thursdays and Sundays (except on Sunday 11th March), it will generally be FREE ENTRY after the bands finish (from 11.30pm/midnight until 3am).

We will continue to have our regular rotation of club nights
on Fridays and Saturdays, plus some new ones starting on Wednesdays ("Shake Yer Shoulders" on 14th March, "Spanglish" on 21st March and fortnightly after that), as well as another new night called "Replei-k8" on Sunday 11th March... They're all listed at http://www.musicglue.net/theraft/  and we'll be adding more info here shortly...

February listings and new website

We've started using Music Glue as the main point of reference for our gig and club listings and we should be selling advance tickets there shortly as well; we are also in the process of sorting an entirely new website for Henry's Cellar Bar and the Raft but in the meantime you can find a provisional list of events at http://www.musicglue.net/theraft/ (currently up-to-date for the first half of February, and gradually adding more events).

We'll probably keep the blog here alongside the main website but make it more bloggy instead of having just listings.

If you need more info about anything or want to get in touch about playing at Henry's or hiring the venue, you can still email claire at theraft dot org dot uk

EdinburghTeknoCartel bring the best underground electronics to Edinburgh and the best Edinburgh has to offer to the rest of the world and this will be the launch of their own regular club night: ETC. Each night will represent a journey through electronic music with a focus towards creating a happy, hedonistic party environment. Expect musical diversity, while still gravitating towards the harder end of the spectrum.
Nights will be themed, with the incentive of cheap entry to those willing to dress up and bring a bit more vibe to the party. The theme for ETC 01 is Space Trash: we are looking for broken robots, Barbarellas, sleazy cyborgs and spaced out princesses to come and boogie down to some sleazy sci-fi beats.

VIV ALBERTINE (http://www.vivalbertine.com), ex-guitarist and main songwriter for highly influential, all female punk, and indeed Post-Punk band, The Slits, plays her first ever Scottish solo dates in November. A founding member of The Flowers of Romance with Sid Vicious, a band of legendary proportions in the punk scheme of things, but who never wrote a song or played a gig; and latterly of The 49 Americans, and Adrian Sherwood’s Dub-influenced collective, New Age Steppers. Viv retreated from Rock’n’Roll to study film-making in 1982 after the demise of The Slits, then working mainly as a director, mostly for television, throughout most of the 1980s and 1990s. Her freelance directing work included stints with the BBC and the British Film Institute
In 2009, she began performing as a solo artist, playing venues around London showcasing new material.. In March 2010 she released a four-song debut solo E.P. titled Flesh on Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! label.
She additionally recorded a cover version of David Bowie's Letter to Hermione for the Bowie tribute album We Were So Turned On: A Tribute to David Bowie which was released on September 6, 2010.
Viv Albertine's debut solo album is scheduled for release in 2012, her first major recorded work in 25 years, and she is currently writing a book, to be published in tandem with the album release.

‘Viv Albertine made a place for girls in music before girl became grrrl’ Courtney Love

‘Viv Albertine doesn’t so much turn back time as stop the clock all together!’ Thurston Moore

LACH
(New York/Edinburgh) - http://www.lachtoday.com

"Lach is rarely less than a face-ache funny, beat-punk-unplugged joy, and likely to send you home with several favourite new songs"- The Guardian UK

“Lach is the mastermind of Antifolk, like a Lower East Side rendezvous of Bob Dylan and Patti Smith. Like black snow, stalled subway cars and random violence, Lach is a Manhattan institution.”- NY Times
“Lach is so what the East Village used to be all about. He's a gruff‑and-tough punk turned poet with a heart o'gold singing jangly, funny, pop‑punk songs.”-TimeoutNY

"Think battered acoustic thrashings, think sarky, smart-mouthed wit and wisdom but most importantly think Lach. Lach is rarely less than a face-ache funny, beat-punk-unplugged joy, and likely to send you home with several favourite new songs"- The Guardian UK
